This ‘themed boutique hotel’ in China is a novel approach to container conversions.
Located in Changzhi city in Shanxi Province a tourist area in China, the shipping container hotel translates as being called the “Xiang Xiang Xiang Pray House”.
The development sits on an area of 5,000 square metres as a part of the City God Temple, an important location for ceremonies .
Rather than the container modules undergoing any kind of external dressing, they have all of their 5 star features on the inside, which includes luxurious fittings and traditional Chinese detailing and decoration.
The hotel has an incense inspired theme with free incense sachets and burners in all of the rooms.
It also features a restaurant, a room for tea ceremonies and a praying room, all constructed from cargo containers.
The hotel was inspired by the use of shipping containers for temporary accommodation after the Japan Tsunami and earthquake in 2011.
There are 21 rooms in total with 35 containers mostly of 20 foot size being used.
The design and construction by the Tonghe Shanzhi Landscape Design Company was completed within 3 months with a minimisation in construction waste as well as increased building efficiencies.
